NME 27th May 1989 Issue No support for climbing Roses THE STONE ROSES have turned down two major support slots in the last two months to concerntrate on building their own career. The Manchester group were offered lucrative special guest spots with NEW ORDER in America and the PIXIES in Britain in favour of headlining shows at smaller venues like the ICA and Dingwalls in London and the International in their home town. "They've never supported anyone in their life and see no reason why they should start now," said a spokesperson for the band. "Other groups would have jumped at something like this, but The Stone Roses have their own thing to do and don't want to be anybody's second fiddle". The band, whose self-titled debut album crashed into the national charts at 32, have been forced to cancel forthcoming shows in Milton Keynes and St Helens because of recording commitments. However, there are headlining shows (naturally) at Preston Guildhall Foyer (May 30), Walsall Junction 10 (June 3), Reading Majestic (6), Leicester University (7) and Leicester University Sugarhouse (8).
