"Gtr"

john squire, gtr, 2004, oil on canvas, 72" x 90"

Gtr is a reworking/reinterpretation of the classic Stone Roses' piece (and record cover), 'Waterfall'; in the same way, 'DDD2a' is a reinterpretation of 'Double Dorsal Doppleganger One' (the 'Fools Gold artwork). It was first exhibited at the Manchester exhibition (May 2004) and was one of eight pieces created in 2005 that was commissioned by and first shown in Aesthetica Magazine, who featured Gtr on their cover as well as an indepth interview.

"'Gtr' (2004), created over the past few weeks seizes the aesthetic of Squires own original 'Waterfall' image and re-presents it on a greater more confident scale, employing a bolder use of colour, sharper division of the canvas, a personal non-derivative style. Indeed it is through this image that we come to see the mature Squire style take shape, through an introspective enquiry a new creative voice has been found, one which holds its own on the gallery wall perhaps even more than on the record sleeve." from JohnSquireArt.com.
