One Love, this painting was copied and ripped up and photographed for 'One Love' (July 1990). The reverse of the cover was a repeating pattern of the original piece. The artwork was also used on the 1995 Silvertone compilation 'The Complete Stone Roses', close to the original artwork and also for the 1995 Silvertone/Weinerworld VHS video of the same name (see below).

"That's another favourite. My brother (Matt Squire) photographed it and it was a little out of focus, I wasn't happy with it, but the deadline had gone for the artwork. The band were adamant that it looked like a swastika, so we had to change it. Someone's released the shirt now - I've seen people wearing it and I don't think 'What's the c*** doing with a swastika on his chest?' That was inspired by the Italia 90 logo and a Duckham's oil can. It's one of the few I took the time to paint on a canvas and stretch over a frame. A lot of the others are on bits of calico and stuffed in boxes. This one's in a large, plywood storage box near Morecambe with all my other possessions." (Speaking to Select Magazine Nov 97)

One Love was released as a limited print in 2006. The print was strictly limited to a run of 150 prints and was available from 13th November 2006 and, as with all the prints was individually numbered and signed by John Squire.

"In response to public demand we are adding the iconic 'One Love' artwork to our print portfolio. This is a unique item, the only true reproduction of the image ever made. The version featured on the front cover of the single of the same name showed the image torn to shreds. This print is bound to be highly sought after with copies limited to 150 worldwide."

STUDY

sean scully, durango, 1990

While it's unlikely that either one piece drew inspiration from the other, both being created in the same year (1990) and the Sean Scully piece is limited to black and white, I feel that there is an undoubted similarity between two pieces, shown even more so in the detail below.

As quoted above, John said that the piece "was inspired by the Italia 90 logo and a Duckham's oil can." Below is the Italia '90 logo and the Duckhams oil logo.
