Main Influences

Jackson Pollock
1912-1956
Obviously John's strongest influence. He initially intentionally attempted to create as close a copy to some Pollock piece as possible for use on all his early Stone Roses cover work, coming up with a range of unique and instantly recognisable designs along the way.
Edward Hopper
1882-1967
Not so much an artist influence but was the inspiration behind John's 2004 concept album, 'Marshall's House'. After receiving a Hopper calendar as a gift, John wrote all the songs around the 12 featured pieces.

Jasper Johns
1930-
There are a lot of similarities between Johns and Squire's more structural works of the Second Coming/Do It Yourself era.
Mark Rothko
1903-1970
Again, a lot of similarities between Rothko and John's early 2006 colour-field pieces.

Gary Hume
1962-
Similar to John's 2004 simplified, form-based works supporting the Marshall's House releases, the 'SU' trilogy and Fool's Gold artwork re- interpretation 'DDD2a'.
Lesser Influences & Similarities
Including Kurt Schwitters, Pablo Picasso, Michelangelo, Georgia O'Keeffe, Francis Bacon and Henri Matisse.
