News that former Stone Roses bassist Gary "Mani" Mounfield and drummer Alan "Reni" Wren are contemplating playing together for the first time since 1995 has rekindled rumours that the band will reform.

Mounfield, currently in Primal Scream, revealed that Wren has set up a drum kit at his house. But he played down reports on BBC6 Music that the pair would go so far as to write songs together. "He's writing his and I'm writing mine, but we haven't got together on any!"

The obstacle to the Manchester band reforming remains singer Ian Brown, who hasn't spoken to John Squire since the guitarist's departure. However, Mounfield is convinced that one of the most bitter rifts in pop history can be healed. "They're both over 40 and it's getting undignified," he said. "I am determined to orchestrate the pair of them being in the same room together without the other knowing."
