JSU Single Review
Ian Brown
All Ablaze
Release Date: 5th September 2005 on Ficton

Seductively dark and lead by your usual strong bass line with inquisitive guitars and understated back beat and slyly including some trumpet work that Ian's so fond of at the moment. This is a much more sinister theme ("Who you gonna get to bring you water/As your well run dry/What you gonna tell your little daughter/Is the reason her daddy makes her cry?") than his 'Love Like A Fountain' days and it moves on well from 'Keep What Ya Got' and 'Time Is My Everything' keeping Brown recreating himself and never re-covering old ground but at the same time gives more than a nod to his lo-fi works like 'Corpses'; a perfect looking glass into Ian's career.
The literal video captures the darkness perfectly, contrasting with Ian playing with fire but he won't get burnt releasing this as the new single off his greatest hits, "The Greatest". And only Ian himself knows the true meaning of his mischievous burning an old Stone Roses promo photograph of himself… "Happy days are all ablaze".
