Rising Times
All The Way EP
Release Date: 8th November 2004

She goes 'All The Way', apparently. Starting with a speaker-shaking bassline that says "welcome to Rising Times", drums come in with equal passion, guitar and vocal (flooding with attitude) kicks in together, the lead guitarist providing some excellent fingerwork. Halfway in, the low-tempo guitar solo misleads before the drum break builds and the lead guitar goes off into finger-destroying speeds. This is the right way to do rock.

Second track 'Hole In Your Soul' is a sublime pop-song, slowed down, but ever-so-cool, the vocal during the verse sounds like a much nastier Tim Burgess (Charlatans) - he should take notes. And the "Oh-o-o-o-oh there's a hole, baby, in your soul/And you wanna change the life that you lead but it's all you know" is infinitely catchy.

'Glodlampa' opens with and continues to feature the drummer's talents throughout the track (with the percussion top of the mix on this track). It has another instantly likeable chorus, which breaks up the track nicely "When you paint the town in your favourite shade/You stop to look around, do you see the mess you've made".

3 well written tracks with 3 perfect choruses, all 3 very different, and after just 3 listens I'm convinced that a debut album from them will be one to own. Rising Times sound as strong here as the live performance I witnessed that first drew me to their music. They seem to have a rare ability to write perfect rock songs but maintain the cool 'just thrown together' feel. It would not surprise me if this band were filling big-capacity venues this time next year. Buy this EP and go to their gigs while it's still cheap to see them play.
