September 2005 Archive
29th September 2005 A bit more info came this morning in an email from Head of A&R/PR, Peter Black... "With regard to the Stone Roses 'Sally Cinnamon' re-issue. The package features Disc 1, the three single tracks plus the 12" version of 'Sally'. Disc 2 is a dvd of the controversial video for 'Sally Cinnamon'. The package features new colour artwork based upon the original sleeve and each copy has a free double-sided A3 collectors poster. XD636 will be released on October 31st on Black Records thru Universal".

29th September 2005 I thought it was working noting (as I just remembered in time) that it's 20 years ago this month that The Stone Roses released their debut single 'So Young' on ThinLine Records 12" in Manchester. The single was backed with 'Tell Me' and was far removed from the classic Roses sound that we all know and love. If you've still to hear these songs then I recommend you hunt them out (they are available on the Silvertone 1995 release, 'The Complete Stone Roses'. The 12" was limited to 1,200 copies and is now a highly priced possession in most Roses collector's record boxes, still reaching prices between £70-£100.

27th September 2005 It seems that The Stone Roses debut 'The Stone Roses' is not the only release due to benefit from the release of Ian Brown's 'The Greatest' package ('The Stone Roses' shooting back up the UK charts to a respectable #19). It seems old record company Revolver Records is about to re-release one-time single 'Sally Cinnamon', again, this time the company plans to re-release it as a DVD single, featuring the same 4-track line-up and its former releases but also featuring a video. And as I doubt they would have invested more cash to remake it, it will be the low-budget original video which was originally met with controversy amongst the Roses.
No doubt it is an opportune time for them as not only has Ian Brown generated a lot of Roses rumours with the release of his Greatest Hits but 'Sally Cinnamon' has been on his set-list of many of his gigs this year and last. Amazon.co.uk are taking pre-orders for the single but gives little info, other than the tracklisting and a release date of 17th October 2005.

27th September 2005 After posting the above news piece, I decided to dig out the original NME article (from Feburary 1990) which detailed what happened the first time Revolver Records re-released 'Sally Cinnamon' (alongside that video) to cash in on The Stone Roses success after leaving their label and signing to Silvertone. Yes, it was the now-legendary 'attack' involving several tins of blue and white paint, a Mercedes, Revolver Boss & girlfriend as well as the inside of the offices ending in a damage bill in excess of £10,000. Click here to read the article.

25th September 2005 'The Greatest' enters the UK Top 40 albums at #5. Not only that but it also must've prompted folk to check out his backcatalogue as The Stone Roses ('The Stone Roses') re-entered the charts (again) at #19.

23rd September 2005 Listen again to last night's BBC Radio 2's Janice Long show with The Yards. There's an interview throughout and the band perform new track 'Last High' and album track 'Superhuman'. The Yards are on from 30mins so you'll have to fast forward a bit, only available for the next 6 days. Click here to listen again to the interview/session.

23rd September 2005 There's quite a big interview with Ian Brown on The Guardian site today. It covers a lot of the same ground as a lot of the other recent interviews (and there's been plenty) but some nice info about early Ian & John and a bit more insight into their relationship past and present. Click here to read the article.

23rd September 2005 A big feature in the NME this week is a look back at the historical musical event that was The Stone Roses at Spike Island. Click here to read the article. In other news Surprisingly Good Events are planning to put on Spike Island 2006 with a number of artists and as the event is scheduled to start on the exact 16th anniversary of the Stone Roses event, they have of course started speculation that Ian Brown might "be tempted into a nostalgic appearance". There are two articles, one from WidnesWorld and one from the Liverpool Daily Post.
22nd September 2005 The briefest John Squire update - Just had an email back from a man in the know at the JS site informing us that he has spoken to John in the last few weeks and confirms that John is busy writing his new album - he has even stopped working on any new artworks to concerntrate on this.
Obviously at this time it's not known when work will be complete but we've all waited this long... hopefully just reading that it's on its way and just a matter of time should have you drawling for more... I recommend a short period of reflection with either 'Time Changes Everything' or 'Marshall's House' on in the background.
On the site front - they hope to completely redesign JohnSquire.com, adding a comprehensive art section to accommodate his more recents moves into the art world and this would no doubt co-incide with his 3rd LP campaign.

22nd September 2005 There's a small articles in the NME this week. They speak to Colin O'Toole, the director of the video for 'All Ablaze' and some of the ideas behind it all. Click here to read the article.

20th September 2005 As previously reported, The Yards' bass-man Stu Fletcher has joined another band with ex-Shed Seven front man Rick Witter called The Dukes. They have launched their own website, which at the moment is limited to their forthcoming Scottish tour dates but will no doubt be expanded on in time. To visit their website, click here.

19th September 2005 After a couple of minor set-backs and date changes, Ian Brown finally releases his Greatest Hits package... 'The Greatest' today. Featuring all his singles to date and featuring new versions, new tracks and a bonus disc (Deluxe Edition) of extra sublime Brownie moments presented in a hard back book format. 16th September 2005 Just uploaded the latest batch of Ian Brown related articles and interviews, including interviews with The Sun, Record Collector, MusicOMH.com, BBC MCR, Manchester Online and Clash Magazine and a couple of reviews 'The Greatest'. More to follow, hopefully. Click here to read all the new articles.

12th September 2005 Andy Watts played another sublime set last Friday evening (well two actually). Sadly due to public transport problems I completely missed his first set but he was obviously in the mood for more and managed to get back onstage later and ended up playing another full 45 min set! New songs included "No Father Found", "Sun Cries In The Sky", "Born Of Stars" (which all featured on his latest 'Home Recordings' CD) as well as some more classic Watts moments. Click here for some photos of said second set.

12th September 2005 The Yards' bass-man Stu Fletcher has joined another band with ex-Shed Seven front man Rick Witter called The Dukes. They are due to play some dates in Scotland soon and their setlist will include newly written material as well as some Shed Seven classics, so no doubt that'll be worth seeing. The full Dukes line-up is: Rick Witter - vocals, Rob Wilson on guitar, Stuart Fletcher on bass, and Matt Lunn (ex-Colour of Fire) on drums.
Stu is also still concerntrating on The Yards, he told JSU: "(we'll) soon have the second album finished (9 tracks complete and 4 - 5 work in progress)".

12th September 2005 According to the Official Ian Brown site, Ian Brown is now a proud sponsor of London based footie squad Chiswick Homefields FC for the 2005/06 Season. The team play in Division 1 of the London Commercial Division and have apparently been promoted on 6 consecutive seasons from their formation. The team's navy kit gets the IB treatment, which will no doubt be the envy of all CHFC & Ian Brown fans alike! Visit www.chiswickhomefields.com to check on their progress throughout the season.

12th September 2005 Ian Brown's 'The Greatest' was due for release today but as previously reported, it was put back a week due to a slight error in production. So those, perplexed by its non-appearance on the shelves, F.E.A.R. not, 'The Greatest' will be released in all its splendour next Monday (19th September).

8th September 2005 The recording process has started for the Warchild compilation 'Help - A Day In The Life'. At noon today bands (including Mercury Prize winner Antony (of the Johnsons), Radiohead, Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party, The Manics, Keane, Razorlight, Mylo, The Zutons, The Coral, Elbow, and Damien Rice) began to enter the studios to record tracks for the fastest ever recorded and released album. The album will be completed in the next 24 hours and available to download on warchildmusic.com at 2pm tomorrow. In the meantime they've revealed the John Squire designed artwork that will accompany the CD version (which will be released shortly after).

7th September 2005 JSU Exclusive - I have just made the full gig at The Exit Festival, Serbia (from August 2005) available to watch. This is audience filmed but very good quality footage, too good to leave sitting in the JSU archives, I hope you all enjoy this one. Includes videos of 'Love Like A Fountain', 'Submission', 'I Wanna Be Adored', 'F.E.A.R.' and many more. Click here to watch the full gig.

6th September 2005 Previous rumours of a collaboration between the three finest Manchester bassists - our Mani, Peter Hook (New Order) and Andy Rourke (ex-The Smiths) and singer Matt Clayson suddenly seems more genuine after a bit of researching today. Indeed we may actually get to hear the fruits of their subsequent sessions. WorldInMotion.net caught up with singer Matt Clayson at a New Order gig and was told, "The last bit of Freebass recording was in July last year (2004) and we have gotten to the stage where I have sang on around 10 out of 18 demo tracks. All of the tracks were previously recorded by Hooky, Mani and Rourkey and it was up to me to come up with melodies and lyrics". Click here to read the full piece.

6th September 2005 There's a small snippet in The Sun today about Brownie slating Mani's pick of the Class '04 - Kasabian. Click here to read the article.

5th September 2005 I've just uploaded a large batch of video footage and photos of Glastonbury and Eden Sessions '05 by regular Adam H (Ad7) so huge thanks go out to him for sending them in. 4th September 2005 There's a small piece on ContactMusic.com that reports Ian Brown has turned down a $1.8 Million (£1 Million) deal to reform the Roses for a tour. The rest of the band were also approached. Click here to read the article. In other news, it is reported that Ian has already started working on a fifth studio album and has signed a further two year contract with Fiction Records.
3rd September 2005 As Ian Brown's 'The Greatest' is due out in just over a week, I thought it'd be great to look back at some Vintage Brownie moments so I've uploaded a huge batch of Ian's early TV appearances including his first solo appearance on Top Of The Pops (My Star), performing 'Can't See Me' on TFI Friday, 'Dolphins Were Monkeys' on The Priory and many more... find them all in the Audio/Video section.

2nd September 2005 Very small piece from Gigwise.com confirming Ian Brown's plans for a 5th studio album to be released in 2006. Click here to read the article.
1st September 2005 JSU is 3, yes, another 12 months has flown past (and now it's 3 years since I first launched the site) and it's time for me to thank everyone for your visits (otherwise I'd be here on my own), emails and contributions to the site. I've been a bit busy this time with other projects, etc, but I've managed to find the time to upload another exclusive John Squire gig from King Tut's, Glasgow 7th February 2004. It's not brilliant quality but it's another Marshall's House-era recording which are pretty scarce. Thanks go out to Stuart for sending me the original recording. I've also given both JSU and IB Whispers sites a bit of a tidy up/new look which should be to your liking. Click here to hear the live recording.
