John Squire - Debut Solo Gig

11th November 2002

JOHN SQUIRE made his solo headline debut in front of a sold-out 300 capacity audience at KING TUT'S WAH WAH HUT in GLASGOW last night (November 11), opening the set with THE STONE ROSES fave 'I AM THE RESURRECTION'.

The show, which had sold out less than two days after going on sale, despite only very limited publicity, is the first of three low-key warm up shows for his forthcoming tour next January and February.

Squire arrived on stage at 10pm to David Bowie's 'Moonage Daydream', flanked by a guitarist, keyboard player, bassist and drummer.

Wearing a shirt with the words "love" and "hate," and "prophet" and "loss" painted on it, he was also sporting badges, including one of the Seahorses' 'You Can Talk To Me' single cover.

As well as playing most of his debut album 'Time Changes Everything', Squire kept the Roses faithful happy with 'She Bangs The Drums', one of the night's highlights, plus 'Waterfall' and 'Tightrope'.

The set-list in full was:

01.I Am The Resurrection (Instrumental Outro)
02.I Miss You
03.Shine A Little Light
04.Transatlantic Near Death Experience
05.All I Really Want
06.She Bangs The Drums
07.Joe Louis
08.15 Days
09.Waterfall
10.Strange Feeling
11.Welcome To The Valley
12.Time Changes Everything
EncoreTightrope

One fan who was at the gig, Mark Strange, told NME.COM: "It was weird to see another bass player play Mani's bass riff but to be honest most folks were just transfixed as Squire let rip right from the word go into a vicious rendition of probably his most famous moment. Initial reaction was that this band could definitely cut it live, they were tight as any band I've seen.

"I personally found it refreshing to have a major artist not be afraid of his back catalogue of brilliant tunes."

The warm-up dates continue tonight, at:

Liverpool University Stanley Theatre (November 12) (NME 5.0 Show)
Birmingham Academy 2 (November 13)
