Re: They're kind of pathetic

How much wealth do you need? Well that's the thing about money isn't it. People spend it. And the Roses have loads of kids and parents and uncles and aunties and farmhouses who I bet like spending money. Did Mr David Geffen include a pension scheme back in 1991? I'll wager he did not. They could eas...

Re: They're kind of pathetic

It's clear that they only got back together for the money I'd say Brown would have liked to put out an album or two but the rest of them were clearly in it for the cash, for Mani to leave a reliable consistent band like Primal scream it must have been some amount of money dangled at him to tell them...

Re: They're kind of pathetic

Sure. I think the band in its classic period had a very original sound. Not devoid of influences but definitely unique. It was only original in the context of the late '80s drum machine / synth / cheesy pop climate. And I guess you could argue that mining the 1960s back then was a 'new' thing to do...

Re: Second Coming--what if "Straight To The Man" and "Good Times" had been b-sides?

Yep, with those ? marks you've got right to the heart of the matter: The lazy bastards didn't have enough songs for a second album in 1990-91 (and forgot to write any. Oops!) But playing along for a minute - stick a properly recorded Angels Play in there. Mooted as follow up to One Love at one point...

Re: Second Coming--what if "Straight To The Man" and "Good Times" had been b-sides?

STTM is great but I would junk Tears (pastiche), Good Times (pub rock shite), and yup - Ten Storey Love Song. Something has nagged me about that song for years, and I finally realised the problem quite recently: It's just not very good ! This makes a nice 9 tracks. Nine track albums are always good....

Re: They're kind of pathetic

In many ways the La's are even more of a frustrating waste than the Roses as they had at least an album of songs ready to go in 1990, probably of better quality than the debut. And the Roses spent 4 years labouring over the likes of 'Good Times'... Btw, did you say this with a straight face? But the...

Re: elephant stone sessions out-take

It'll happen at some point - along with more live dates - when the funds get depleted. Mark my words.

Surely someone will licence Second Coming from Geffen at some point as well and stick that out with extra tracks.

Re: They're kind of pathetic

I'm no huge fan of Blur but their workrate in the 90s was phenomenal. Like most other bands, they utterly shame Brown & Squire. Didn't Albarn write For Tomorrow hungover in one day at his parents house?

Re: elephant stone sessions out-take

The most interesting thing in that Reni rehearsal tape is how well-spoken they are - especially Brown. The time before being a professional Manc was a thing. "The better a singer's voice, the harder it is to believe what they're saying” David Byrne (via Hooky's New Order book). Not sure that's alwa...

Re: Ian Brown response to opening up to the Rolling Stones

Around that time (1990) IB also called David Bowie 'crap' and 'a chancer'. Some of his bravado was amusing back then, but saying that about Bowie was taking the piss I agree, but you have to remember that in 1990 Bowie was in the midst of his Tin Machine phase and was looking more than a little bit...
