Another example of the incessant roster of shocking groups coming from Manchester. With one single record, The Stone Roses have been proclaimed debutant of the year. However, they are not new; Martin Hannet and New Order have crossed their path to produce singles for them with a growing value. There is, even, a possible record registered in 1986 and produced by the same Martin Hannet that has never seen the light. JORGE ALBI and RAMON NOGUERA, excited about the band, took advantage of the recent performance of the group in Valencia, their first in Spain to get their opinions.

“Noire music! Noire music!” Reni, the drummer, chose to ask the DJ of the venue where they held the interview. He had been besieged by an ocean of guitars one after another. A great shout came from Mani, the bass player. How they danced, arching their backs, once they heard the songs off the new albums by the Beastie Boys or De La Soul, in the meantime Ian, lead vocalist, was eager for some fun, jumping into the DJ booth to place himself into the mix with “Don’t Believe The Hype” from Public Enemy.
“You can find us anywhere where there is music. We don't need money, we just need people.”
Such attitudes strongly deny much of the questions that circulated around their status as pedantic stars.
“People think we're arrogant because they don't understand us.”

Their seductive, constant and progressive credentials all confirm the forecasts of the media that incessantly bet on neighbouring bands like Inspiral Carpets or Happy Mondays.
With a humble and extroverted appearance, always in their characteristic clothes (bell-bottomed pants, long sweaters) fruit of a laborious journey through the pedestrian areas of Valencia, and with a decent record that discards all sorts of hypotheses, they have become one of the most overwhelming sensations that English pop has been able to find in many years since, perhaps, The Jesus And Mary Chain. There is no need to be ashamed, both Morrissey and other contemporary bands from the the first wave of the new sounds (New Order, The Fall) represent today the past. The Stone Roses are worship, resurrection, and consequently, the future.
“We are the future, the 80s are over.”
They have a breath of honesty that unites two very different but compatible concepts: love and work. In a musical encyclopedia that restores the basic spirit that was born with the groups of the 60s -Byrds, Beatles, Hendrix or even Simon and Garfunkel- to bring a special language and innovation in pop culture.
But, keep an eye open! Do not let the Roses know! They are tired of being described as such.

Not even for the groups that perpetuate their influence, such as Primal Scream? What about the dinosaurs who are returning, willing to take up their hegemonic baton, like Lou Reed or the Rolling Stones?
“We certainly don't share this opinion. They are back because they have run out of ideas. Why don't they stay in their house instead of throwing so much rubbish at people?”

Far from self-assertion, they debuted at the end of the 85 with “So Young”, a single that despite the production of Martin Hannet doesn't show any kind of achievement. The next step came two years later, when they released “Sally Cinnamon”, an excellent sample of considerable mystical aesthetic. Which gave way to its later independent consecration with the release of “Elephant Stone” in 1988- frenzied fury under the direction of Peter Hook, with obvious wah-wah shrieks. “Made of Stone” copied “Velocity girl” by Primal Scream, singles whose covers were specially designed by John, guitarist, former art student, and in love with the graphic prints of Jackson Pollock.
“Stone hides a special magnetism. A stone, when buffed, becomes a diamond. We are trying to hypnotise people, although there are people that have not got a heart. They are made of stone.”

It is a tough fight. They have earned it. “She Bangs The Drums” single and eponymous record “The Stone Roses”, allow them to enjoy a good reputation, getting tasty sales (even in Japan, over 20 000 copies) and sold out tickets months before their concerts.
The fact of refusing to share a stage with The Rolling Stones, New Order or Pixies has forced competing agencies to comply with their demands.
“What we are showing is that we are not doing it just for money. We like to impose, that's why we're here, on the stage. We are self-taught; we do it when and how we want to.”

They would say in an ironic tone, the lyrics of their songs will take us to the promised land, in the face of unanimous disagreement that Paul Weller does it. Lyrics that can be approached in very different ways; existentialist, narcissist, (as in “I wanna be adored”) and above all politics. They work by their own principles. They belong to an anarchist political order.
“Will not pass! We are socialist because we belong to the working class. We aren't politicians. We just believe that people are free, but we also try to work less because we're lazy (laughs). As for social problems, passports shouldn’t exist, just a planet! The barriers of all countries should collapse into one love, one God and one Earth.”

Not very consistent with their belligerent arguments, they go deeper in other matters concerning their opposition to the monarchy, which they refer to on their album, specifically, the queen of England.
“It was time for someone to do it! It's enough. We are absolutely fed up with the monarchy, which always takes money from the people. The queen is the richest woman in the world. The worst is that she is not even English: she's German. When there is so many people living poorly around there, with little means of subsistence, it's not fair that there's a family living in such luxury. It reminds me of Camelot, again and again. The Thatcher era should end. We have to be optimistic. But unfortunately there are still people in England who are stupid.”

They have it clear, no doubt. They are authentic correspondents of a country in crisis. Their direct and flattering messages are further deteriorating to the current British socio-political situation. They follow the tradition of many of the groups that showed at the time a strong aversion for the regimes of the times, as was the case with the Sex Pistols. Unfortunately, they don't know the importance of the Spanish groups.
“We only know Duncan Dhu. There are not enough Spanish groups: there should be more. Also, the Spanish tradition never has been pop music. You have to break the tradition. We just get American sounds, but Spanish groups should go to England because there are not too many good groups there.”

In short, the Stone Roses greatest desire is to keep in tune with the new times ahead and to be remembered as “A great group of pop music on the entire planet.” For now they remain untouched by the rigorous world criticism. And from here we are confirming with our hand in our hearts that already they are true giants of Earth.
