Shane Meadows to Make Sequel To Made Of Stone

Post by Awful One » Mon Nov 27, 2017 12:31 pm

It's early days yet, but watch this space.

I have seen a rough draft of the script and it basically Shane and his mate going to the pub, twiddling their thumbs, hearing All For One for the First time, "that was the Newie that took 4 fooking years" and ends with Shane taking revenge.on each Rose, One by One (like.Dead Man's Shoes) . After ending each Rose he say 'Ya made me look.loike a but of a knob a"and at the end it turns out his mate is a ghost.

Shane then says to his mate that actually it was The Happy.Mkndays that he truly loved.

There were rumours that there was going to be some sort of follow up. Meadows did film some later gigs and MSG was definitely filmed/recorded, not to mention all the unused stuff from the 2012 gigs and rehearsals. But with everything in disarray (again!) it looks like the footage will now gather dust... :(

I still think Meadows was the wrong choice to make the reunion film, but - as a fan - I bet he's as disappointed and annoyed as the rest of us.

In retrospect, Made of Stone pretty much captures everything that was interesting about the reunion:

  • The initial excitement of the announcement
  • The band re-connecting through their old music
  • The journey of Warrington Parr Hall > European tour > Heaton Park
  • The tension between Reni and Ian
  • The fact that it was mostly about nostalgia while attracting some younger audiences
  • The complete silence from the band

In that sense, the documentary looks better today than it did when it came out. We all thought there was more to say but, in fact, there probably wasn't.

Great post, hadn't looked at it like that before.

The reunion, in terms of being a finite thing, was fine. Good gigs, good press, and a couple of new tunes (opinion is subjective).

If the band had said "we're reforming with a view to becoming a working band again; doing gigs, making albums, and going on tour" then it would be different. But they didn't. They reformed to play some big shows, "dropped" a couple of tracks to keep the interest up, and then went back to what they were doing before. It probably went on longer than they had thought it would, as they obviously got offered more big gigs and more big pay cheques.

This isn't like, say, Ride, or Slowdive - who reformed with the purpose of making an album, which they both did, to widespread acclaim and success. Those two bands will carry on and the expectation will be more records, more tours.

So I suppose it's about managing expectations really. The Roses never said what their intentions were (besides the hyperbole spouted at the press conference).

In hindsight, the majority of the press conference was hyperbole, with the exception of Heaton Park and some big gigs around the world.

Ian and John writing songs in a heartbeat, restored friendships, 17 new somethings, not a trip down memory lane, a live resurrection, etc. is now all hyperbole.
